Taking pets on a train

China's railway operator has launched a pet transport service allowing owners to travel with cats and dogs on high-speed trains.

Pet owners can bring eligible cats or dogs — weighing up to 15 kilograms and no taller than 40 cm at the shoulder — aboard the train in a designated cargo area. Pets must be healthy and kept inside ventilated, compliant carriers throughout the journey. 

You can reserve a space for your pet through the official Railway 12306 mobile app. Follow the step-by-step guide below.

Note: While the 12306 website and app offer English interfaces, the "Pet Transport" booking module is available only in Chinese for operation.

1. Download the Railway 12306 app and log in to your account.

2. Swipe left on the home page's function bar to find and enter the "Pet Transport" entry, and complete your reservation at least two working days before departure. 

3. Select a high-speed route that offers pet transport service. Enter the departure station, arrival station, and travel date, then tap "Check remaining space" to view eligible trains. If you have not yet purchased a passenger ticket for the same train, tap "Buy your own ticket" to complete your ticket purchase first. Trains labeled "Booking available" are eligible for pet transport reservations.

4. Fill in the required information for the consignor, receiver, and your pet. Mandatory pet details include name, species, breed, age, weight, and shoulder height. You also need to upload a clear photo of your pet.

On your travel day, bring your pet, personal ID document, and a valid Animal Quarantine Certificate to the designated China Railway Express counter at the departure station two to six hours before the train's departure to complete the consignment procedures. You may collect your pet at the CRE service counter of the arrival station once you receive a pickup notification. 

Shipping fees are calculated based on your travel distance: 360 yuan ($49) for trips under 1,000 km, 460 yuan for trips between 1,000–1,500 km, and 660 yuan for trips of 1,500–2,000 km.

Pet cargo

Airlines such as Hainan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Air China, Shandong Airlines, and Sichuan Airlines have introduced "pet cargo" services, where pets are placed in specially designed, oxygenated compartments.

In-cabin pet travel

To make travel more convenient and comfortable, airlines such as Hainan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, and Shenzhen Airlines now allow pets to travel in the cabin. Your dog or cat can accompany you in a carrier, ensuring they remain within sight and reach throughout the flight.

Preparing for the flight

Pet carrier

To qualify for in-cabin travel, pets must be small enough to fit in airline-approved carriers under the seat. China Eastern, Shandong Airlines, and Hainan Airlines allow carriers no larger than 35cm (length) × 28cm (width) × 24cm (height), which excludes larger pets. Juneyao Airlines allows pet containers of up to 58cm × 37cm × 35cm for pets under 10kg. 

As for pet cargo travel, larger containers (90cm × 60cm × 66cm) are allowed. The total weight, including the pet and container, must not exceed 32kg. The carrier must also comply with IATA Live Animals Regulations.

Health and documentation

Before booking your flight, ensure your pet's vaccinations are up to date. Airlines typically require proof of rabies vaccination and an Animal Health Certificate issued by a government-approved veterinarian or animal quarantine agency. You may also need to sign an Application for Pets Transportation.

Booking

Pet transport services are often limited, so it's essential to book early, especially during peak travel seasons. 

Prepare all required documents well in advance, and check with your airline for any specific paperwork needed for pet transport. 

Airline-specific pet rules and services

Hainan Airlines

• In-Cabin Pet Services: Pets in the cabin must wear a muzzle and diaper throughout the flight for domestic routes, and the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you.
• Online Booking: Available through the Hainan Airlines app.
• Additional Services: Pet insurance and full-service care options are available.

China Southern Airlines

You are allowed to book a seat for your pet at least six hours in advance.

Air China

Only one pet per passenger is allowed. Pregnant or newborn pets are not accepted. 

China Eastern Airlines

Pets may not be allowed to travel in the cargo hold if the temperature at any transit point is below -12 C or above 30 C.

Pricing and fees

Pet transport fees vary based on the airline, route, and whether the pet travels in-cabin or in the cargo hold. Most airlines charge based on weight, at 1.5 percent of the economy-class ticket price per kilogram for the pet and carrier. 

Some airlines, such as China Southern, use fixed rates based on flight distance and pet weight. Confirm specific charges with your airline when booking.

Picking up your pet

Many airports have designated pet pick-up areas. Some airports offer direct pet delivery services, allowing you to reunite with your pet at baggage claim. After landing, monitor pets for signs of stress, such as excessive panting or lethargy. Provide water and a quiet space for recovery.
