Shanghai bets big on quantum AI with new alliances
Shanghai has launched the Joint Quantum AI Initiative and the Shanghai Innovative Consortium for Quantum Technology and Equipment to accelerate research in quantum technology and promote its practical application.
The two initiatives were unveiled on Sept 21 at the Pujiang Innovation Forum in Zhangjiang Science City, Shanghai.
The Joint Quantum AI Initiative brings together 12 research institutions and leading companies to advance interdisciplinary research in quantum artificial intelligence.
Over the next five years, it aims to deliver breakthroughs in fundamental theories, core technologies, and major applications, while also cultivating talented individuals in the field, according to Li Xiaopeng, a professor in the Department of Physics at Fudan University.
Spearheaded by the Shanghai Academy of Science and Technology, the Shanghai Innovative Consortium for Quantum Technology and Equipment unites key enterprises and research institutions in the Yangtze River Delta region.
It is dedicated to industry aggregation, collaborative problem-solving, standards development, and the creation of a supporting environment to enhance China's quantum technology equipment competitiveness.
At the forum, Shanghai presented ten potential application scenarios for quantum computing across sectors such as power, finance, logistics, renewable energy, and biomedicine.
State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company is testing quantum computing optimization to accelerate adoption in the energy industry and enhance the safety of Shanghai's power grid, according to Pan Aiqiang from the State Grid Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute.
