The Shanghai Institute for Science of Science (SISS) has opened applications for postdoctoral researchers under its 2026 talent program.

Established in January 1980, the institute is a key think tank and talent research base in Shanghai. It is a public welfare research institution dedicated to serving innovation-related decision-making, focusing on demand, problems, and practical application in areas such as science and technology innovation strategy, policy, industrial technology innovation, entrepreneurship, statistics, evaluation, as well as science and society.

Eligibility

1. Candidates must demonstrate strong integrity and professional ethics, with no record of legal or disciplinary violations.

2. Candidates should have obtained, or be about to obtain, a doctoral degree from domestic or international institutions.

3. Preference will be given to candidates with a research background in science or engineering and a high level of English proficiency.

4. Candidates must be in good health and under 35 years old. Outstanding candidates may be considered up to 40 years old.

5. Candidates must be able to work full time in the postdoctoral position.

Research fields and directions

1. Technology innovation strategy and regional innovation

Covers technology innovation and Chinese path to modernization, technology innovation strategy and planning, the development of international innovation centers, regional innovation, and theoretical studies of technological innovation.

2. Science, technology, and innovation policy

Covers frontier studies in international innovation governance, policy research in hard-tech fields, integrated reform in education, science and technology, and talent development, the transfer and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, as well as science and technology legislation and policy evaluation.

3. Technology foresight and industrial innovation

Covers trends in technology evolution, changes in technology roadmaps and innovation models, the identification and planning of frontier and disruptive technologies, and research on mechanisms for cultivating future industries.

4. Technology and the economy

Covers innovation in high-tech parks, technology services, technology finance, and entrepreneurship.

5. Technology statistics and evaluation

Covers statistical monitoring of key indicators and evaluation of international innovation centers and regional coordinated innovation.

6. Science of science

Covers theories of the science of science and the basic laws of scientific and technological innovation, science and society, science communication, science and technology ethics, and science and technology and international relations.

Compensation

Salaries and benefits will comply with national and local regulations, as well as the institute's relevant policies.

Application requirements

Interested candidates should select a research topic from the required fields listed above and submit the following materials:

1. Personal resume, including educational background, work experience, and main research achievements.

2. Copies of doctoral graduation and degree certificates. Those who have not yet received their degree certificate should provide proof that they have passed the doctoral thesis defense and must obtain the degree certificate within six months of starting their postdoctoral appointment.

3. Doctoral thesis and two representative research works.

4. Postdoctoral research plan of approximately 3,000 words.

5. In-service candidates must provide a certificate from their employer confirming approval to take leave from their current position to work full time in the postdoctoral position.
