China's railway operator has launched a pilot service that allows pet owners to carry their furry friends on high-speed trains.

The service is currently being provided on trial basis at 10 trains operating between five major stations: Beijing South, Jinan West, Nanjing South, Shanghai Hongqiao and Hangzhou East.

The trains are G119/118, G121/122, G127, G134, G183/184, and G195/196.

Pet owners can take eligible pets — cats or dogs weighing no more than 15 kilograms and under 40 cm in shoulder height — aboard the train, but in a separate cargo section. The pet must be in good health and will be transported in a carrier during the journey.

You can now book a space for your cats or dogs through the Railway 12306 app. Here is a step-by-step guide:

(Notice: While the 12306 website and app offer English versions, the 'Pet Transport' feature is available only in Chinese.)

1. Download the Railway 12306 app and log in to your account.

On the day of travel, you need to bring your pet, your ID, and a valid Animal Quarantine Certificate to the designated China Railway Express (CRE) office at the departure station.

Your pets can be picked up at the arrival station after receiving a notification via text or phone call.

During the journey, train staff will monitor the pets every two hours and offer them water. However, you will not be allowed to see them during the trip.

Shipping fees are based on distance: 360 yuan ($49) for trips under 1,000 km, 460 yuan for 1,000–1,500 km, and 660 yuan for 1,500–2,000 km.

During the trial operation, users of the service will enjoy a 30 percent discount. A basic insurance policy covering up to 2,000 yuan is also included free of charge.

If you want to know more about the pet transport services, dial the 12306 or 95572 (China Railway Express) hotlines.
