Shanghai Museum East, having received over 900,000 visitors since its partial opening on Feb 2, will be closed from May 21 until the end of June.
The closure of the museum located at No 1952 Century Avenue in Pudong New Area aims to enhance visitor capacity and service standards as part of the second phase of the venue's opening plan.
During this period, key exhibition halls will undergo renovation in preparation for the reopening. The bronze gallery, sculpture gallery, and the Stars Over China: The Ancient Shu Civilization of Sanxingdui and Jinsha exhibition will remain accessible until May 20.
Upon reopening, the museum will expand its space to approximately 80 percent of the total area, showcasing permanent galleries themed on ceramics, seals, jade, and numismatics, along with new thematic and interactive exhibition spaces.
The museum suggests visitors stay posted through its official website, WeChat, and Weibo accounts for the reopening date, which has yet to be announced.
The Shanghai Museum on the People's Square will remain open for visitors to enjoy the regular exhibitions featuring Chinese historical paintings, calligraphy, furniture, and ethnic minority crafts from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 to 1911), and the special exhibition All That Glitters: Chinese Cloisonne as a Gift from Robert Chang's Collection.
