Shanghai welcomes Mid-Autumn Festival with travel rush and festivities
As the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday begins, Shanghai is bracing for a major travel rush from Sept 14 to 18. More than 15 million passengers are expected to travel by rail across the Yangtze River Delta, with Shanghai Railway Station handling over 2.2 million alone. The busiest day is Sept 15, with nearly 600,000 travelers hitting the rails.
This year, there has been a noticeable decrease in travel costs. Domestic airfares have fallen by 25 percent compared to the previous year, while hotel and car rental reservations have exceeded pre-pandemic levels. Shanghai has emerged as the top holiday destination, with bookings skyrocketing by 252 percent from the previous year.
Iconic spots like Disneyland continue to draw substantial numbers of visitors, while cultural venues also see high attendance rates. The On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt exhibition at Shanghai Museum is still drawing plenty of attention, and the newly opened Shanghai L+ Snow Indoor Skiing Theme Resort, the world's largest indoor real-snow skiing facility, has quickly become one of the city's most popular attractions.
Food lovers are embracing the celebratory ambiance as mooncakes are flying off the shelves. Brands such as Sunya and Guang Ming Cun are witnessing extended queues for their freshly prepared mooncakes.
According to Sunya's head chef, Huang Renkang, over 20,000 Suzhou-style mooncakes are sold daily. New flavors like curry beef and low-sugar alternatives are gaining popularity, with vegetarian mooncakes from the Jade Buddha Temple selling out fast.
With festive treats and exciting attractions, Shanghai is buzzing with activity during this Mid-Autumn Festival, making it one of the perfect time to explore the city.
