German beer festival returns with bigger, bolder celebration
The Shanghai Show Bund German Beer Festival has returned to the Yangpu Riverside, offering visitors an upgraded experience with an extended schedule, broader international participation, and richer opportunities for cultural exchange.
Running for seven days through Oct 1, this year's festival more than doubles last year's three-day schedule, giving residents and international visitors extra time to join the festivities.
The event has also broadened its global reach. Alongside the German and Danish consulates, which joined last year, this year's edition welcomes representatives from Austria, Greece, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Sweden, Slovakia, and Romania. A special Austrian-themed promotion was held ahead of the festival, which further boosted Yangpu's international profile.
Beyond the main venue at Oriental Fisherman's Wharf, two satellite sites — Daxue Road and Meet 678 — are hosting parallel events, creating a district-wide celebration. Streets have been decorated with festival-themed photo spots, banners, and displays, while restaurants along Daxue Road are offering discounts to amplify the festive mood.
The cultural program has also been enriched. Highlights include an Austrian fashion show by a guest designer, live performances by German and Filipino bands ranging from jazz to rock, and official beers flown in directly from Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival and folk celebration, held every year in Munich, Germany.
