World's largest Lego masterpiece reimagines 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' on West Nanjing Road
The "Shanghe: Spring Revival" fashion debut season opened on March 21 at CITIC Square, marking the launch of a citywide exhibition across the West Nanjing Road commercial area.
Running through April 26, the program spans a 2.3-kilometer stretch of the district, featuring six newly unveiled art installations and linking major malls, time-honored brands, and historic buildings.
The title "Shanghe" references the exhibition's centerpiece, a 26.5-meter Lego installation inspired by Along the River During the Qingming Festival, a panoramic painting widely attributed to the Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan (1085-1145).
Created by Lego certified professional Hong Zijian and his team, the work reimagines the original monochrome scroll as a three-dimensional, vividly colored city scene. Completed over the course of a year, it set a Guinness World Record in 2024 as the largest Lego diorama in the world.
The exhibition unfolds in three sections from west to east. At Jiuguang Department Store, the "Sprouting" chapter brings together four female artists working across ceramic sculpture, recycled materials, video and documentary, and floral installations, capturing the first signs of spring. At Plaza 66, a series of installations explores literary culture, traditional craftsmanship, and the relationship between people and nature. At CITIC Square, the final section presents the record-setting Lego work alongside contemporary illustrations.
Beyond the main exhibition, the program extends to workshops, a themed market fair, and sports activities throughout the district. Visitors can explore large-scale indoor and outdoor installations, engage in hands-on sessions led by intangible cultural heritage artisans, and experience a market inspired by traditional street life. Fitness events, including themed runs, offer an additional way to connect with the season.
