Shanghai hosts world's first Anpanman pop-up bakery
Anpanman, the beloved Japanese children's character with a red bean bun head, known for his selfless acts of kindness, has arrived in Shanghai for a limited-time themed pop-up. Running from April 17 to May 24 at Shanghai Jiuguang Department Store, the Anpanman Street Pop-up Bakery marks the first event of its kind worldwide, presenting the character and his friends in a new, fashion-inspired style.
Ahead of the official opening, the department store was transformed into a themed street setting, attracting visitors eager to take photos. Installations featuring Anpanman and other characters extend from the building's exterior to interior spaces, including a central staircase and the second-floor terrace where the pop-up is located. The setup creates an immersive environment with bright colors and interactive elements. Visitors have praised the carefully designed displays, noting they are perfect for photography, with many stopping by specifically to take pictures.
A key highlight of the event is the debut of Anpanman-themed baked goods, which are usually only available at overseas Anpanman museums. For the first time, these treats are being offered in Shanghai, shaped like main characters such as Anpanman, Uncle Jam, and Baikinman. The selection includes red bean butter buns, strawberry jam cream cheese buns, fresh bread loaves, and other character-inspired designs. Prices generally range from 28 yuan (about $4.10) to 46 yuan, with combination sets available.
In addition to the baked goods, the pop-up offers a range of limited-edition merchandise featuring the new character designs. Products include plush keychains, drinkware, laptop bags, stationery, and clothing. Some items are designed around the bakery theme and are only available during the event period.
The venue is open daily without reservations, though visitors should expect to queue during peak hours.
