New Jing'an hotspots offer a laid-back summer escape
Searching for a spot to unwind this summer? Jing'an district has launched four new attractions that blend greenery, art, shopping, technology, and food, inviting both locals and tourists to enjoy outdoor spaces.
Start at Suhewan Central Green Space, where the city's popular "scruffy puppy" has returned with a summer makeover.
The 5.2-meter-tall West Highland white terrier-shaped topiary first became a social media sensation in spring for its fluffy, slightly messy look. Now it has been refreshed with heat- and humidity-resistant grass, a colorful floral "vest" of lantana and dusty miller, lotus flowers, and hydrangeas around its base, and a new misting system that fills the area with cooling water vapor throughout the day.
At Jing An Kerry Centre on West Nanjing Road, visitors can explore Fish-tastic Town, part of The Fish-tastic Summer, a collaboration with Paramount and Nickelodeon.
The event marks the China debut of the Bikini Bottom Buddies exhibition, spotlighting the quirky background fish characters from SpongeBob SquarePants. A 17-meter inflatable fish, themed outdoor spaces, interactive installations, and pop-up stores offering more than 300 merchandise items transform the shopping center into a playful summer destination.
Additionally, more than 200 exclusive products are also available during the event, including customizable collectible figures that let visitors mix and match outfits, hairstyles, and accessories.
Just a short walk away, Yongyuan Road continues to grow in popularity among residents and international visitors.
The 500-meter street is known for its mix of international brands and Chinese designer labels, and its laid-back atmosphere is one of its biggest draws. A 2,000-square-meter lawn with more than 60 native plant species provides an open space for picnicking, relaxing with pets, or simply spending an afternoon outdoors.
Nearby, META500 on Yuyuan Road has opened as the debut project of the country's first digital consumption block. Visitors can try the Shanghai debut of the Qwen AI Glasses S1 and G1, VR and MR interactive experiences, and customized 3D printing.
Life Hub @ Daning has completed a major upgrade, introducing more open public spaces, street performances, expanded dining options, and areas designed for visitors to relax rather than shop.
Its first major event after the renovation is the Dessert Festival, running from July 9 to 12.
The festival brings together popular bakeries, dessert shops, gelato brands, and specialty cafes from across China. On July 11, visitors can also enjoy a giant puppet parade featuring classic literary characters, with stilt performers and elaborate costumes.
