Chanel's le19M brings French craftsmanship to Shanghai
Chanel's cultural project, la Galerie du 19M Shanghai, has opened at the Museum of Art Pudong, featuring works by artists, designers, and craftspeople from China and France.
Established by Chanel in Paris in 2021, le19M houses 11 specialist workshops that employ nearly 700 artisans and experts, along with la Galerie du 19M, a space dedicated to promoting craftsmanship. The Shanghai project marks the first time le19M has brought its craft traditions to the city.
The project features three sections. Les Maisons introduces the 11 workshops through an installation by Studio Adrien Gardere. These workshops specialize in pleating, embroidery, costume jewelry, metalwork, feather and camellia flower work, textiles, millinery, footwear, and clothing.
The group exhibition A Sense of Touch features works by the workshops' artisans and more than 31 creative practitioners from China and France. The exhibition presents embroidery, weaving, lacquerwork, ceramics, and indigo dyeing in dialogue with contemporary painting, sculpture, installation art, and video.
The third section of the project, Lesage: 100 Years of Fashion and Decoration, presents a new version of an exhibition jointly curated by the Lesage embroidery workshop and Emilie Hammen. Founded in 1924, Lesage was integrated into Chanel's specialist workshops in 2002. The exhibition traces Lesage's century-long history in embroidery and weaving.
