The 21st Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, or Auto Shanghai 2025, opened with a bang on April 23 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) — with the pre-eminent industry event now on course to run through to May 2.

This year's auto show coincides with the Sixth Shanghai Shopping Festival, which runs from late April through to the end of June. As part of the festivities, the city is organizing a series of auto buying campaigns, including promotional activities by car brands and dealerships.

The efforts also support national and local policies on scrapping and replacing older vehicles, aiming to boost the wider automotive market.

Various districts across Shanghai are launching special car-themed events:

- Jiading district is offering subsidies of up to 2,000 yuan (about $275) for vehicle purchases made between March 21 and May 21. The incentive applies to both new and used cars.

- Jing'an district will host the first Shanghai Street Auto Life Festival on May 1-5, promoting car culture and encouraging consumption.

- Songjiang district will launch the 2025 Songjiang Auto Carnival on April 30, featuring a large-scale car exhibition and increased subsidies compared with previous years.

- Putuo district will kick off its Auto Quality Consumption Carnival on April 30 at Zhenru Unipark Max shopping mall. With the theme of "Auto Plus" consumer experiences, the event will combine financial incentives with innovative car-related marketplaces, including trendy car boot sales, bread and coffee fairs and neighborhood lifestyle bazaars.

- Other districts, including Pudong New Area, will also roll out local incentive programs — combining national, municipal and district-level subsidies to further stimulate car purchases.
