ACGN pop-ups take over Shanghai this fall

As the Shanghai Summer International Consumption Season rolls into September, the enthusiasm of local "chi gu" fans — a playful pun on "goods" referring to those who buy anime, comics, games and novels or ACGN products — shows no sign of slowing down.

Across the city, themed pop-ups are bringing beloved characters, shows and games into real life. Even if you're not very familiar with ACGN culture, these events offer fun photo ops, limited-edition merchandise and a lively introduction to Shanghai's fan scene.

Here are six highlights you won't want to miss this season:

Azur Lane-themed pedestrian street

When: Sept 13-14

Where: No 40 Daxue Road, Yangpu district

Step into the world of the hit mobile game Azur Lane. The themed pedestrian street features a giant inflatable mascot, game-inspired check-in spots and even baby versions of characters that are just perfect for selfies. Fans can also try out interactive games for a chance to win exclusive prizes.

What is Azur Lane?

Developed in China, Azur Lane is a side-scrolling action game where players collect and battle anthropomorphized warships. The game blends history with fantasy — introducing idol versions, mythical designs and collaborations that go well beyond naval themes.

Pingu pop-up store at L+ Mall

When: Now until Sept 14

Where: 5F Atrium, L+ Mall, No 899 South Pudong Road, Pudong New Area

The world's most lovable claymation penguin has waddled into Shanghai! A 3-meter-tall Pingu statue greets visitors at L+ Mall, setting the stage for fun snapshots. More than 20 types of merchandise are available, from badges and tote bags to the highly coveted CCD camera.

Who is Pingu?

Pingu is the star of a stop-motion children's animation series beloved worldwide for his funny "noot-noot" catchphrase and heartwarming adventures.

Harry Potter, Miniso pop-up store

When: Now until Sept 14

Where: LG2 Atrium, Century Link Mall, No 1192 Century Avenue, Pudong New Area

Potterheads, rejoice! Chinese retailer Miniso has teamed up with the Harry Potter franchise for themed pop-ups in four Chinese cities, including Shanghai. Visitors can explore a Hogwarts-inspired display and shop a wide range of collectibles, from Hogwarts Express blind-box charms to plush dolls. Shoppers who spend enough can also take home freebies like a Gringotts coin pouch or a blind-box display rack.

Nobody-themed restaurant

When: Now until Sept 15

This summer, Chinese animated film Nobody became a runaway box-office hit. Now, fans can dine in a pop-up restaurant inspired by its whimsical world. The decor echoes scenes from the movie, while the menu offers playful Journey to the West-themed dishes. Exclusive merchandise, from acrylic stands to plush toys, is also on sale.

What is Nobody?

Rooted in Chinese mythology yet universal in message, Nobody follows a pig demon and his ragtag group of small monsters as they pursue survival, dignity and dreams in a harsh world. Its blend of humor and heart has resonated deeply with audiences across China.

Rozen Maiden 20th anniversary pop-up store

When: Now until Sept 14

Classic anime Rozen Maiden celebrates its 20th anniversary with a Shanghai pop-up store. Fans can browse exclusive keychains, badges and commemorative stands — as well as admire the beautifully crafted ball-jointed dolls of iconic characters Suigintou and Shinku.

What is Rozen Maiden?

This manga and anime series follows Jun Sakurada, a reclusive boy who encounters Shinku, a "living doll". The story blends gothic fantasy with the themes of connection, growth and the quest to become the ideal "Alice".

DIMOO "Crush on Coffee" pop-up cafe

When: Now until Oct 31

Where: Room 202, 2F, Building 5, Gate M West Bund Dream Center, No 2266 Longteng Avenue, Xuhui district

One of the cutest figurines of Chinese toymaker Pop Mart, DIMOO, gets a sweet makeover in this coffee-themed pop-up cafe. Inside, pastel DIMOO decorations set the mood alongside themed drinks and limited-edition merchandise. Lucky visitors may even spot DIMOO's friends "popping up" at the tables for a photo opportunity.

Who is DIMOO?

Created by Chinese artist Ayan Deng, DIMOO is a dreamy, melancholic little boy often depicted in whimsical, solitary settings — floating in space, sitting in the rain, or gazing at the moon. His unique design has made him a collectible favorite among Pop Mart art toy fans.
