Running now through Nov 9, the fifth edition of the Bund Art Festival is jointly presented by Fosun Foundation, Bund Finance Center, and Yuyuan Garden Malls. The festival showcases large-scale installations, light art, performances, and interactive experiences along the Huangpu riverside.

A cosmic experience on the Bund

This autumn, BFC is hosting a walk-in "cosmic theater". In the North Plaza, an 18-meter-tall illuminated Earth gradually lights up, displaying shifting patterns that represent the universe. On the South Terrace, a 10-meter-wide super moon rises into the night sky, casting a soft glow over the river. Together, the two installations create a striking view of "heaven and earth in harmony". The giant Earth is on display only from Sept 20 to 23, giving visitors a rare chance to explore the theme of the cosmos up close.

Light installations also transform everyday spaces. In the first-floor atrium, fashion house Alexander Wang presents an automotive-themed artwork combining mechanical and futuristic design. In the VIP lounge, Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama's Sexy Robot mixes human-like forms with machine elements, offering a sci-fi-inspired visual experience.

Fun and interactive moments

This year's festival also emphasizes fun and interaction. Neon installations spelling out the Chinese characters "Ha Ha Ha" are placed throughout BFC's corridors and Yuyuan old streets, adding bright and playful touches. At Yuyuan Garden Malls, art meets taste in playful spaces where visitors can enjoy light-hearted experiences.

Daytime exhibitions, nighttime events

In the evenings, BFC comes alive with performances and screenings. French choreographer Sophie Renier presents a theater piece exploring rhythm and movement. Rooftop film nights show popular Chinese animations such as Yao-Chinese Folktales and Calabash Brothers.

The night market adds more energy, with handmade crafts, trendy toys, and street food creating a lively social atmosphere. Events like the handicraft festival, featuring pottery and aromatherapy workshops, mix with late-night DJ sets and light parties, giving the Bund a vibrant character both day and night.

BFC will also host the national debut of Miffy's 70th anniversary pop-up store from Sept 26 to Jan 4. A giant inflatable Miffy welcomes visitors at the South Entrance, while an escalator decorated with themed illustrations leads to the Miffy Garden, designed exclusively for families.

Inside, the store recreates Dick Bruna's picture-book world in 3D, with illustrated counters, windowsills, and tables. Visitors can explore themed areas, enjoy food, and purchase limited-edition merchandise made for collectors and fans.
