A guide to using delivery services
China's robust logistics network offers a wide range of options for sending and receiving packages, both domestically and internationally. From popular domestic couriers like SF Express and China Post to global giants such as DHL and FedEx, this guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to ship packages, track deliveries, and navigate the process.
Sending packages
Domestic
Most small packages should cost around 12 yuan to send within China. China's delivery services also have a tracking service, which you can either use via the company's app or WeChat mini-program, or by using the app "CAINIAO" (菜鸟), which bundles several logistics providers together.
If you choose to send the package yourself, you may need to know some basic Chinese or ask a friend for help. After requesting a delivery person to your address, just wait for the courier to arrive and pay the fee, which can be done using various types of payment.
SF Express is a very popular logistics company that provides English-language services on its official website.
Step 1: Select "Ship Now" on the homepage, or select "Shipping" from the "Service & Support" menu to find the "Shipping" section.
Step 2: Fill out the form by providing the name, local phone number, and local address in China for both the sender and recipient.
Step 3: Choose the shipping mode to schedule a pickup day and timeframe.
Step 4: Enter a one-word description of the contents and select from the available options, or click "Confirm" to enter. Next, enter estimated weight and quantity.
Step 5: Select a payment method and choose speedy or standard express option.
Step 6: Select optional value-added services like shipping insurance.
Step 7: Leave a message to the courier if you require shipping supplies or other services.
Step 8: Check estimated price, agree to E-waybill and conditions by checking the radio button, and click Place Order to confirm.
Step 9: Real-name verification of the sender will be completed in person when the courier picks up the package.
Below is the process that the courier will follow to collect your ID information:
- On the order pickup interface of the courier's app, the courier will click "Go to Verification."
- On the real-name verification interface, the courier will select the type of identification document.
- The courier will choose "Foreigner's Passport" or "Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card," and verify by scanning or manually inputting the information on your ID.
After the courier picks up your package, you will receive a tracking number. With this tracking number, you can track and trace your order, view waybill details, monitor the delivery route, and get updates on its delivery status.
International delivery
In addition to international express companies such as DHL, UPS and FedEx, domestic companies such as SF Express and China Post are also popular choices for reliable international shipping online. All of the services have Mini Programs in WeChat to easily place an order.
SF Express
Visit the "Shipping" section of the English website of SF Express described in Step 1 above and choose "International Shipping" from the Shipping menu.
You can also search for international shipping services in WeChat Mini Programs. From the "Discover" menu click on Mini Programs and search for "SF International" or "顺丰国际快递" in the search box.
After entering the SF International Mini Program, click "我的" (Me) on the far right of the bottom navigation bar. Next, select "语言设置" (Language Settings), and choose "English".
China Post
China Post, the official postal service of China, provides two kinds of international delivery service: postal service and EMS (Express Mail Service).
If you choose EMS service, you can order online through the "EMS" WeChat Mini Program. The courier will come to your location to pick up the package, like the process described above for SF Express.
The post service is more cost-effective, although it has longer delivery times, and the WeChat Mini Program is only in Chinese.
Here is a guide on sending a package from a local post office. Remember to bring your passport or other valid ID documents.
Step 1: Inspect your items
The staff will inquire about and inspect the items to be sent. Some articles are prohibited, such as fruit, fresh meat, liquids, and creams, so wait to seal the package at the post office after it has been inspected.
Step 2: Weigh your package & calculate the charge
The staff will help you pack your items with a suitable box. You will be charged for the packing box. Freight fees are determined based on the weight of your package and the chosen shipping service.
Step 3: Provide the shipping information
You will need to provide information about the sender and the recipient, including name, address, postcode, phone number, etc., as well as a description of the items to be shipped. If you encounter difficulties, the staff will assist you, or you can refer to the sample as a guide.
Step 4: Pay the postage fee

Receiving packages
Typically, your package will arrive at a post office somewhere in the community for you to collect. You will need the information as to which office and which of the packages is yours. This may be sent to you by SMS or in the APP as outlined above, or, for online purchases, on the platform used to make the purchase.
Your package may also be sent to a self-pick-up locker within your residential complex. Simply enter the password that has been sent to your phone and the locker will open.
