Do I need six months of passport validity to enter Shanghai visa-free during a layover?

english.shanghai.gov.cn| October 15, 2026

Q: I am an Italian citizen traveling from Brisbane, Australia, to Milan, Italy, on Nov 8, 2026, with China Eastern Airlines, with a layover in Shanghai. My Italian passport will expire on March 15, 2027. I will have a confirmed onward ticket from Shanghai to Milan.

Could you please confirm whether a minimum of six months' passport validity is required in my situation?

A: Please note that holders of ordinary Italian passports may enter China visa-free for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchange visits, or transit, for stays of no more than 30 days.

Your passport validity must be sufficient to cover your intended stay in China.

There is no requirement for your passport to have at least six months of validity remaining.
