Online pre-application
1. Residence permit first-time application (student)
① Open the website of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and select "first time apply for resident permit (Student)".
Read the notice before proceeding to the next step.
② Fill in the applicant's information. Upload the required documents.
③ Then, an application number will be generated.
④ Navigate to "Service Inquiry 业务查询" → "Online Application Inquiry for Foreign Nationals 外国人网上申请查询". Enter your application number and passport number to check your application status.
If your application is accepted, you will receive a notice with the date for submitting the required materials at the designated offline service point. Applicants aged 16 to 60 making a first-time application must apply in person.

2. Residence permit extension
① Open the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau website and select "Extension for resident permit".
② Select your type of residence permit.

③ Fill in the applicant's information.
④ Then upload the required documents before submitting them.
3. Residence permit renewal (change of passport number)
① Open the website of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and select "Renewal for residence permit".

4. Change of address on a residence permit
① Open the website of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and select "Alteration of address in residence permit".

In-person submission

• Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm (except for statutory holidays; Saturdays for document acceptance only)

💡 Processing time
Once all application materials are complete, processing will be completed within seven working days.
💡 Processing fees
1. Residence permit valid for less than 1 year: 400 yuan/person
2. Residence permit valid for 1 year or more but less than 3 years: 800 yuan/person
3. Residence permit valid for 3 to 5 years, inclusive: 1,000 yuan/person
4. Adding an accompanying person: An additional fee will be levied at the corresponding rate for each added person
5. Removing an accompanying person: 200 yuan per person per application
6. Change of residence permit information: 200 yuan per application
