Iconic Shanghai No 1 Yaohan store gets facelift
Shanghai No 1 Yaohan Co Ltd — the country's first large-scale joint-venture retail company, which operates the department store of the same name in Shanghai — is undergoing its most significant renovation since opening in 1995.
Once a glowing symbol of modernity with its iconic six-story "Big Curved Wall" and a Guinness World Record for welcoming over 1 million visitors on its first day, this historic department store is adapting to meet the needs of a changing city.
The renovation includes restoring the "Big Curved Wall" to its former glory by removing obstructive ads, polishing the 12 zodiac relief sculptures and adding greenery and seating to create a more welcoming atmosphere.
The entrance steps have been redesigned with gentler slopes and handrails for improved accessibility.
These upgrades are said to be in harmony with new outdoor features such as a "Green Hill" and a "Light and Shadow Carpet" — creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
In the face of stiff competition from modern shopping malls and membership warehouses, Shanghai No 1 Yaohan is part of a broader effort of the city to renew historic department stores across the city.
Local retail giant Bailian Group is also revitalizing other classic landmarks, such as Wing On (Yong'an) Department Store and Orient Shopping Centre. With tailored renovation strategies, these efforts aim to preserve the charm of old Shanghai while addressing contemporary demands.
