2024 Summer Chinese Program at Donghua University

Founded in 1951, Donghua University (DHU) is one of the 75 universities under the direct management of the Ministry of Education of China. The International Cultural Exchange School (ICES) provides various popular non-degree Chinese language programs at its downtown campus in Shanghai. DHU's Chinese language programs have been accredited by EAQUALS (Evaluation and Accreditation of Quality Language Services) for its high teaching quality and management since 2018, which is the first accredited institution in China.

The program not only focuses on language fluency but also provides guidance on various aspects of Chinese culture, society, and history. These experiences will enhance students' cultural awareness and communication skills, enriching their lives in Shanghai and China.

Course plan:

Program Period: July 8 - Aug 9, 2024 (five weeks); July 8 - 26, 2024 (three weeks)

9 am – 12:15 pm (Beijing Time), Monday to Friday

★Remark: July 8 is registration day, instruction begins July 9.

The Chinese Language Center is located in the center of Shanghai and all summer courses will be conducted at the West Yan'an Road campus.

※ Chinese classes:

Focus on enhancing your oral expressive abilities, combined with grammar explanations and topic discussions. A maximum of 10 levels will be open, including beginner, elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. You will be placed in the appropriate level based on the online placement test result. (Minimum of eight students per class).

※ Cultural lecture/workshops:

Introduce China's customs and culture in diverse formats, such as Chinese characters culture, Chinese cuisine, Chinese calligraphy, traditional Chinese medicine culture, and making Chinese knots.

※ Language practice:

The program goes beyond language fluency, offering guidance on Chinese culture, society, and history. These experiences enhance students' cultural awareness and communication skills, enriching their lives in Shanghai and China.

Fees (per person):

※ Application fee: 200 yuan ($27.81)

The applicant who has never studied at DHU before and is recommended by an international student who was or is studying at DHU will enjoy application fee waivers.

※ Tuition fee:

>>> 5 weeks (July 8 - Aug 9)

6,000 yuan

>>> 3 weeks (July 8 - July 26)

3,600 yuan

Payment methods: Cash, UnionPay, Online Payment (WeChat, Alipay, Visa/MasterCard)

Course completion:

※ Three-week program: No final exam, students will receive the proof of enrollment, but no program completion certificate.

※ Five-week program: Students who complete the course will receive the program completion certificate.

Course features:

※ The small class size assures that teachers have enough time to give each student the best learning experience.

※ Students will be placed in a class fit for their proficiency level.

※ The program integrates Chinese language practicability with forms of cultural expeditions and activities.

※ The program is the only language program in China accredited by EAQUALS, which guarantees consistency and quality in the teaching methods.

Application:

1. Submit the online application at https://admissions.dhu.edu.cn/ 

--> Type of Program: "Full-time: General Chinese Language (A), Summer/Winter Chinese Program"

--> Program: "Summer Chinese Program"

--> Term: "Summer 2024"--> Course Time: Choose the course time you prefer, "3-week program" or "5-week program".

2. Upload the required documents. Please ensure that all the documents are clear and visible.  Required documents include but are not limited to:

  • Scanned passport information page (PDF)
  • One bareheaded electronic ID photo (JPG; please refer to the passport photo requirements)

3. The university will review your application and contact you via email. Please pay the application fee following the instructions given in the email. Additional information may be required.

4. Wait for the admission result via email, which may take two to four weeks. In some cases, the review process may take longer due to the volume of applications.

Applications will be officially evaluated. If admitted, you will receive a notification email with the relevant information about the online placement test and enrollment affairs.

Visa: Documents for the student visa application will be provided to the student case by case. Please consult the office for details.

※ Admitted students can apply for campus accommodation. Please follow the program's official notice and emails for the application and room application status check.

Insurance: International students are required to purchase insurance, of which the validity should be enough to cover one's study duration.

Full refund: study terminated before instruction starts.

No refund will be accepted after instruction starts.

Class arrangement: You will take a placement test to evaluate your Chinese level and will be assigned to the appropriate class based on the test result.

In the first week, you are allowed to change the class level within a specific timeframe.
