The International Cultural Exchange School, or ICES, is a specialized institution providing Chinese language and culture education for international students at Fudan University and is dedicated to promoting multicultural communication.

ICES has a proud history of more than 50 years of excellent international education. ICES has a remarkable faculty with various academic backgrounds ranging from literature, linguistics, culture study, history, and philosophy to economics, management, and international relations. ICES is home to seven Confucius Institutes around the world and is appointed one of the first four bases of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in China. ICES accepts international students for long-term and short-term language programs, general advanced, and other tailor-made programs. ICES also provides degree programs for undergraduates majoring in Chinese Language & Culture and Business Chinese, and for Master candidates majoring in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. More than 3,000 international students from over 100 countries study with ICES's "mini United Union" every year.

Program overview

The Summer Chinese Language Immersion (SCI) Program is designed for international students who want to learn Chinese and get an insight into Chinese culture and daily lives. The program allows students to enhance Chinese proficiency rapidly and get a unique, rich experience of Chinese society, customs, and colorful culture.

Chinese courses

ICES provides courses at levels from beginner to advanced levels. Students will always find an appropriate level of classes in the language program. Class levels will be determined based on their placement test or interview results. The final schedule will be published after registration.

Culture workshops

Students will have the opportunity to learn about China’s rich history and culture through lectures and workshops on various cultural topics.

Cultural immersion activities

Adhering to the experience learning concept, students will have the opportunity to go out of classrooms to visit cultural sites in Shanghai and travel around to explore the best of Chinese culture and history to experience Chinese people’s lives. Optional self-paid field trip options may include Suzhou and Wuxi in Jiangsu province, Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, and others.

Teaching environment

ICES is in the center of Handan campus with a beautiful environment and convenient transportation. The campus is located comfortably beside Wujiaochang, north Shanghai's booming commercial center. All classrooms are equipped with multimedia systems, which make the teaching interactive. The Reading Room is perfect for self-study.

Apply

Session duration:

July session: July 3–30.

August session: Aug 1 –28

You can choose to join July Term or August Term or both terms.

Application deadline:

Application begins on Mar 15. The deadline is May 26.

Application fee: 400 yuan ($55.3)

Full program fee: 5,600 yuan for one term, 11,200 yuan for two terms.

The program fee includes all courses and cultural immersion activities.

Housing costs and optional trips are not included.

*Final tuition criteria are subject to enrollment pricing announced by the Financial Office of Fudan.

Application requirements: Applicant must be a citizen of a foreign country between 18 and 60, and in good mental and physical health.

Application materials:

1. One completed application through the University’s Online Application System (including supplementary information form, education background, family members, emergency contact person, etc.) with all required documents uploaded.

2. One regular passport copy (personal information page – passport validity must be adequate for study).

*If necessary, the university will require applicants to submit extra materials.

2. The online application procedure is as follows:

3. How to apply online:

Please select Personal Application, Student Type: Language Student, Admission Institution: International Cultural Exchange School, Teaching Language: Chinese. Please keep "Program Name" blank. Click the search button to show the program list.

Then click to choose "Summer Chinese Language Immersion Program SCI July Term or Aug Term or July & Aug Term" in the list. Then click the "check major" button on the right.

Please click "Apply" to begin your application and upload all necessary materials required.

*Please take extra care in filling in the address online where you would like to receive your Admission Notice. Once you have completed the application process, this address will not be changeable.

*Class will be canceled if the participant number is less than 15.

What happens next

Please pay attention to the status and message in the application system after your application is submitted successfully. The application fee payment shall be made immediately after your online application. The application status will be changed to “In Review” and then “Accepted” based on the online application procedures. It will take another two to four weeks to prepare paper documents for the admission package after the online admission is finished. The admission package will be sent via courier express to the requested address in your application. Please make sure that the receiving address is the one where you can receive the admission package. If you choose to collect the admission package personally in school, please contact us before you come to make sure the admission package is ready. You will need the documents in the admission package to apply for a Visa to China. Please pay attention to the validity of your Visa and do not misuse it for early entry. Usually, students can arrive several days before the registration date. Fudan can provide assistance with Visa only after your registration in school.

The Visa Application Form for foreign students has been digitally certified:

> Students who study for 180 days or longer shall be certified with JW202 FORM;

> Students who study less than 180 days shall be certified with the new DQ FORM;

Log on to the Study in China website (https://www.studyinchina.edu.cn), and input your name, passport number and email to view or download your JW202/DQ FORM after the admission and related procedures are completed.

*Please ensure that the validity of your passport can cover the study period when submitting the online application. The passport shall not be renewed, and the passport number shall not be changed until your registration on campus in Fudan. Otherwise, your JW202/DQ FORM will be invalid.
