Program overview

East China Normal University was the first university to introduce an American-style "International Summer School" in China.

Over the past decade, with its top-standard North American undergraduate-level courses, GECISS (Global Education Center International Summer School) has accumulated extensive experience, thus enhancing its teaching quality, course accreditation and credit transfer operations, as well as its student satisfaction rate.

It now enjoys a high reputation among European and North American universities, such as McGill University, Queen's University, York University.

Previous students that have attended GEC International Summer School have successfully transferred credits back to their home universities, and GEC International Summer School has achieved 100 percent succeed rate in credit transfers.

Eligibility

High school, undergraduate, and graduate students from all over the world are welcome to join the program. As all courses at the Summer School are instructed entirely in English, applicants must have one of the following requirements.

> IELTS score of 6 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill.

> TOEFL Internet Based Test score of 80 with a minimum of 18 in all skills.

> International Baccalaureate Standard Level English, grade 4.

> For local students in Chinese Universities must have successfully passed CET-4 or another standard test at an equivalent/higher level.

> Applicants may also be accepted into the program if they are studying at an English-speaking university or high school. They must upload their academic transcript from the most recent academic year or proof of enrollment.

> Local students at Chinese high schools must have an average of over 90 percent in the English subject.

Note

As students select courses, they should expect that the summer sessions are intense, and that hard work will be required. Please feel free to consult the advisers at ECNU GEC ISS for professional advice. For high school students or graduates, besides proof of English language proficiency, a Statement of Purpose (word limit: 250) is mandatory to elaborate on why you are motivated to participate in this Summer School.

Course format

1. The ECNU GEC International Summer School offers a wide range of courses instructed by accredited professors from all over the world. All courses are strictly arranged in accordance with the rigorous US and Canadian academic system.

2. All courses are taught in English. Each course has 25 class sessions in total. All sessions are two hours in length. The total amount of teaching hours for this program is 50 hours. Students can also expect office consultation hours that total no less than 120 minutes every week.

3. All courses follow the course outlines of most North American universities and correspond directly with the North American university education system to ensure credit transfers.

4. Each course of the program will be awarded three credits, which is equivalent to a standard –three-credit semester - long course in the US and Canadian universities.

5. Each course at ECNU GEC International Summer School can fit 40 participants maximum. Subsequent students will be added to a wait list.

Course selection

1. To ensure teaching quality and student health, students can take a maximum of three courses for each session and a maximum of six courses over the entire Summer School. Registered courses cannot be partially deferred to another school year.

2. Class capacity is limited, so the “first-come-first-service” principle is applied. Subsequent students will be added to a wait list.

3. During course appraisal, the school reserves the right to cancel particular courses due to an insufficient number of registered students.

Evaluation methods

The course instructors will strictly follow guidelines implemented by the Summer School’s Academic Board. For specific evaluation methods, please refer to course outlines.

Certification and accreditation

Upon the successful completion of the courses, students will receive a Certificate of Completion, and an official transcript issued by ECNU Global Education Center (GEC).

Credit transfer

The ECNU Global Education Center is responsible for issuing official academic transcripts, awarding three credits for each course. Each course bears 50 teaching hours.

Policies on Student Exchange and Study Aboard differ greatly from university to university. Before you apply for ECNU GEC International Summer School, please contact the study abroad office, registrar's office or an academic advisor at your home university to learn detailed information about credit transfers.

Application procedure

Online applications

Sign up and apply for ECNU GEC International Summer School via geciss.com and upload proof of English language proficiency, and proof of enrolment at current university/high school. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified about the results within five business days.

*Application deadlines are June 8 for the June session and July 13 for the July session.

Online payment

Within 10 business days upon receiving an offer into this program, please pay the full tuition and fees online. After receiving payment, receipts will be sent back within five business days.

Course enrollment

Two months before the courses start, the course enrolment system will be open. Please enroll in the exact number of courses as stated in the application. A course confirmation letter will be sent within five business days.

Scholarships

Each year, ECNU GEC International Summer School will provide the following scholarships to students according to their academic performance in the program, references by professors, and the number and level of enrolled courses:

1. Distinguished students: 10 distinguished students will be selected and awarded a 5,000 yuan ($690) scholarship each.

2. Outstanding students: 10 outstanding students will be selected and awarded a 1,000-yuan scholarship each.
