Summer in Shanghai's ECNU leaves expats determined to revisit
This summer, Chinese language learners from around the globe converged at East China Normal University, or ECNU in Shanghai, to immerse themselves in the rich diversity of the country.
From classroom instructions to one-on-one tutoring, from engaging language games to real-life interactions, the journey of learning Chinese is both vibrant and multifaceted.
Activities such as fan painting, museum visits and tours of various companies in Shanghai further enriched everyone's extracurricular experience. Let's hear what the students have to say!
Jihyun Kim, from South Korea
This is my first time in China and Shanghai's development surpassed my expectations. The convenience of using QR codes for entry, payments, transportation and ordering food was astonishing.
Although communicating with locals was sometimes challenging, I remember the help I received. Whether it was friends helping me navigate life in Shanghai, dormitory staff, or friendly passersby giving directions, I felt the kindness of the Chinese people.
My most memorable cultural experience was painting on fans. Using a brush and ink to depict the beauty of China made me feel like an ancient Chinese artist.
Elisa Dubois, from Belgium
As a business student, I especially appreciate the visits to two major companies based in Shanghai. However, the cultural experiences, like visiting the China Art Museum, were just as valuable.
Shanghai is a city that never sleeps. It is a vibrant metropolis teeming with culture and remarkable sights to explore. Iconic attractions like the Yuyuan Garden, with its serene landscapes and stunning architecture and The Bund, offering breathtaking views of the skyline, are just a few examples of the incredible places that showcase the city's rich history and modern charms.
Deylan Dyare, from United Kingdom
The ECNU campus is large and well-equipped, offering a variety of sports facilities such as tennis courts, football pitches, basketball courts, a running track and even a swimming pool.
Furthermore, Shanghai itself is a bustling city with endless activities and sights, from exploring downtown to visiting the famous gardens. It's also conveniently located near other major cities, like Nanjing, which is about an hour away by train. I highly recommend using the weekends to visit other cities.
I am now determined to revisit China in the future, to explore deeper its history, traditions and landscapes. This experience has been more than just academic; it has been a journey that has enriched my understanding of a fascinating part of the world.
