Since their establishment in the 1960s, the Chinese language programs at East China Normal University have been a premier platform for international students to master Chinese. For the spring 2025 semester, the university is offering its Standard Chinese Language Program (with February and April intakes), Intensive Chinese Language Program, and Business Chinese Language Program.

01 Standard Chinese Language Program (February intake)

1. Schedule

Duration: Feb 17 – June 20, 2025 (Orientation week from Feb 17, classes start on Feb 24)

Class schedule: 20 classes per week (45 minutes per class)

Total weeks: 18 (including orientation). Classes are suspended during public holidays and school activities. Placement test notification will be sent about five weeks before the start of the program.

Application deadline: Jan 10, 2025

2. Fees

Application fee: 800 yuan ($109.62)

Tuition fee: 9,800 yuan per semester (textbook fees not included)

* Midterm enrollment is available with a minimum period of two weeks, at 1,000 yuan per week.

3. Textbooks: A list of required textbooks will be provided at the start of the semester, including 40 Lessons for Basic Chinese, Developing Chinese, China Focus, etc.

4. Program features

Small class size: Maximum of 24 students per class.

Diverse courses: Comprehensive instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing by ECNU's expert faculty.

Leveled courses: 12 levels to match all proficiency levels.

Rich electives: Options like HSK preparation and pronunciation correction (free, limited spots).

Field trips: One per semester, optional with additional fees, to explore cultural and natural sites.

Learning resources: Free premium account for a Chinese learning app.

Completion certificate: A transcript and a certificate will be provided upon completion.

02 Standard Chinese Language Program (April intake)

The course content and weekly schedule for the April intake are identical to those of the February intake, with the only difference being the start date.

Program duration: March 31 – June 20, 2025 (Orientation week from March 31, classes start on April 1)

Total weeks: 13

03 Intensive Chinese Language Program

1. Schedule

Duration: Feb 17 – June 13, 2025 (Orientation week from Feb 17, classes start on Feb 24).

Class schedule: 29 classes per week (45 minutes per class)

2. Fees

Application fee: 800 yuan

Tuition fee: 14,000 yuan per semester (textbook fees not included)

*Midterm enrollment is available with a minimum period of two weeks, at 1,200 yuan per week.

3. Textbooks: Developing Chinese, New Horizon College Chinese, New Target Chinese Spoken Language, etc.

4. Program features

Intensive courses: Accelerated learning, ideal for those seeking rapid progress.

Comprehensive skill improvement: Focus on all language skills with interactive and multimedia methods.

Small class size: Maximum of 25 students per class.

Strict management: Emphasis on learning efficiency and feedback.

Diverse activities: Visits to scenic spots, traditional festival celebrations, cultural lectures, speech contests, and more.

Learning resources: Free premium account for a Chinese learning app.

Levels: Elementary, basic, intermediate, pre-advanced, and advanced. Minimum of eight students per level.

*If the class size requirement is not met, students may transfer to other programs.

4. Program features

Tailored for those engaged in or preparing for business careers related to China.

Focuses on business-specific vocabulary and communication skills.

Thematic courses on contemporary Chinese economy and finance, along with practical communication skills.

Business scenario simulations, including negotiations and presentations, to enhance fluency, confidence, and accuracy.

Professional lectures and visits to large enterprises and multinationals to experience corporate culture and management firsthand.

Refund policy

A full refund will be provided if you withdraw before the semester starts and complete the withdrawal and visa cancellation procedures. A 70 percent refund will be provided if you withdraw within two weeks of the semester's start and complete the procedures. No refund will be provided after two weeks.

Application materials and fees are non-refundable once submitted.

Visa and accommodation

ECNU provides visa application documents for enrolled students. On-campus accommodation is available for a reasonable cost.
