North Bund's Zhapu Road food guide gets upgrade
The North Bund subdistrict has released an enhanced edition of its Zhapu Road food guide, expanding it from a straightforward dining list into a rich companion for exploring local life, culture, and services. The new version also includes an English translation, inviting visitors from around the world to experience the authentic charm of old Shanghai through its flavors and streets.
A guide that maps out the neighborhood
The guide turns the Zhapu–Kunshan Road area into a living map. Beyond classic noodle shops and pan-fried bun stalls, it draws attention to historic alleyways, cultural landmarks, and even local cobblers, offering a full day immersed in Shanghai's everyday rhythms.
A curated 30-minute walking route leads visitors from a bowl of traditional eel noodles to Western-style baked rice, then on to photo spots in century-old villas, before ending with delicate soup buns, allowing each stop to unfold another layer of local culture.
From paper guide to community link
What was once a paper guide has now become a community link connecting shops, residents, and travelers.
The upcoming 3.0 version will deepen this role by featuring stories behind the storefronts, such as the Fuhe Noodle Shop, which grew from a lane-side stall into a modest chain while still keeping its tradition of simmering fresh broth every morning. The next edition will also offer interactive touches, from historical notes to ideal photo times, enriching every visit.
The subdistrict is piloting a points program as well. Spending at participating shops will earn credits that can be redeemed for riverside viewing seats or hands-on craft workshops, strengthening ties between businesses, visitors, and the neighborhood community.
