First phase of Zhangyuan's east section opens
The first phase of Zhangyuan's east section opened on June 30 in Shanghai's Jing'an district.
Since opening more than three years ago, Zhangyuan's west section has introduced more than 50 high-profile first stores and hosted over 280 cultural, commercial, tourism, sports, and exhibition events. It has recorded an average of more than 50,000 visits a day, with peak daily attendance exceeding 130,000.
In the newly opened section, several preserved historic Shikumen buildings have been transformed into immersive retail and lifestyle spaces.
Palm Angels, a luxury streetwear brand inspired by Los Angeles skate culture, has opened its first limited-time concept store in Shanghai. Palm trees, sunset motifs, and neon lighting recreate the atmosphere of Southern California beaches within the century-old Shikumen setting.
Apee, the women's line of A Bathing Ape, launched a concept store featuring heart motifs, colorful camouflage patterns, and Baby Milo installations. The brand also partnered with Shanghai specialty coffee brand Plusone to debut a limited coffee truck, adding a street-style cafe experience to the area.
Barbie opened its first summer ice-themed pop-up in China in the newly opened section and collaborated with Lavazza for the first time in Asia to create themed beverages.
% Arabica and The Matcha Tokyo also introduced Zhangyuan-exclusive beverages, adding a refreshing seasonal touch to the historic setting.
With the opening of the first phase of the east section, a direct connection has been established between HKRI Taikoo Hui and Zhangyuan. New access from North Maoming Road has also improved circulation between Zhangyuan's east and west sections and surrounding commercial areas.
Work on the rest of Zhangyuan's east section is steadily progressing. In addition to the preservation and restoration of historic Shikumen buildings, the project includes an 88,000-square-meter, three-level underground space.
The underground space will integrate transport, retail, and cultural functions, facilitate transfers among Metro lines 2, 12, and 13, and provide parking and commercial facilities.
