Shanghai among top three esports cities globally
Shanghai has ranked among the top three in the worldwide esports city rankings for the third consecutive year, according to an annual report by KPMG China.
Shanghai, in good standing with Los Angeles and Paris as the global top three, is recognized as one of the leading esports cities worldwide, said the 2023 rankings report, which was released on Dec 30 during the final competition of the 4th Esports Shanghai Amateur Championship in Shanghai's Putuo district.
According to KPMG China's report, the global esports market generated $1.64 billion in revenue in 2023 and had an audience of 570 million people. By 2027, North America will account for 36 percent of the market, followed by Europe at 32 percent and Asia at 27 percent, the report said.
In recent years, Shanghai has implemented a comprehensive approach to promote esports. This includes introducing industry-support policies and standardization, hosting esports games and fostering enterprises.
These efforts aim to accelerate Shanghai's establishment as the "global esports capital".
The city has hosted 40 percent of esports events nationwide. It contributes to 45 percent of national esports event revenue and 54 percent of esports club revenue in the country.
