SJTU student wins top prize in Shanghai video contest

An international student named Aleksandra Antonenko from Shanghai Jiao Tong University or SJTU clinched first prize for her video Love Shanghai, Love Coffee in a recent video competition held by Shanghai Municipality's Information Office.

Representatives from nine elite universities in East China's Shanghai – including SJTU – gathered for the "Generation Z's Voice: Enjoy China" New Year's Gathering, featuring the video competition and awards ceremony.

Antonenko, as a student representative, shared her thoughts at the event.

SJTU was also honored with the Best Organizer Award, highlighting the diverse talents of its international students and enhancing the New Year's celebration.

Originally from Russia, Aleksandra Antonenko has developed a deep affection for Shanghai during her studies. Her winning video immerses viewers in the diverse coffee culture of Shanghai, featuring visits to numerous coffee shops across the city.

"For someone who loves coffee as much as I do, Shanghai is the perfect destination," Aleksandra said.

She also highlighted the abundance of coffee shops on the SJTU campus, where the enticing aroma of coffee accompanied her throughout her enriching experience studying abroad.

Aleksandra shared that crafting the short video was not only a thrilling journey through Shanghai, but also an opportunity to engage with and learn alongside students from various countries, deepening her comprehensive understanding of China and Shanghai.

The event showcased a dynamic array of cultural performances by international students, featuring passionate Laotian dances, energetic Pakistani performances, lively Moroccan music and singing, as well as great English songs. These presentations not only demonstrated the talents of Generation Z, but also highlighted the charm of diverse cultures.

The attendees joined together in singing Tomorrow Will Be Better to celebrate the upcoming New Year.

The event also offered various activities – including creating rubbings, writing the Chinese character fu for good fortune and experiencing Chinese shadow puppetry. The activities provided international students with an immersive experience in traditional Chinese folk customs.
