Guinean neurosurgeon saves Chinese patient after training in Shanghai
Ibrahima Sory Souareze, a Guinean neurosurgeon who trained in Shanghai, was recently credited with saving the life of a Chinese patient upon his return to Guinea.
Ibrahima, a graduate of the University of Conakry in Guinea, holds a doctoral degree in neurosurgery. In 2016, he embarked on a rigorous four-year residency training program at the China-Guinea Friendship Hospital. During this period, he honed his skills and knowledge in neurosurgery.
Guinea is the first sub-Saharan African country to establish diplomatic relations with China and China-Guinea Friendship Hospital stands as the first comprehensive hospital built with Chinese assistance in Guinea. The hospital's overall environment, hardware facilities, and equipment are at the forefront in Guinea.
In December 2019, Ibrahima was selected for specialized neurosurgical training in China and began his studies at Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai. Over four years, he demonstrated exceptional dedication and proficiency, independently conducting 806 digital subtraction angiography (DSA) examinations and participating in over 2,000 surgeries. Additionally, Ibrahima contributed significantly to academic research, publishing six scholarly papers and actively engaging in various domestic academic exchanges.
On Dec 29, 2023, he completed the specialized training program and returned to Guinea, where he embarked on a new chapter of his career at the China-Guinea Friendship Hospital.
Mao Ying, president of the hospital and deputy director of the neurosurgery department, advised Ibrahima to bring back high-quality medical technology and services to benefit people in Guinea.

Fresh from completing the training program at Huashan Hospital, Ibrahima achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing the first DSA examination in Guinea. The patient, a Chinese male, suffered from an intracranial hemorrhage, slipped into a coma, and was promptly transported to the China-Guinea Friendship Hospital. Ibrahima's DSA examination uncovered a dural arteriovenous fistula in the anterior cranial base. He conducted a craniotomy to close the fistula, leading to the full recovery of the patient.
Mao expressed his praises upon reviewing the case materials and surgical videos sent by Ibrahima, saying, "I am genuinely surprised by your independent execution of such a complex neurosurgery. This procedure demands extremely delicate surgical skills. I am proud of your accomplishment. Keep up the exceptional work. We are all here to support you."
