Shanghai's universities welcome new students in style
As the universities in Shanghai recently opened their doors at the start of the academic year, new students from around the world each embarked on their own unique academic journey.
Let's explore how Shanghai Maritime University and New York University Shanghai (NYU Shanghai) in particular welcomed the newbies.
Experiencing maritime culture
Recently, 15 freshmen from Shanghai Maritime University visited China's Polar Research Institute to tour the Xue Long or Snow Dragon icebreaker.
This pioneering vessel has conducted numerous Arctic and Antarctic missions, significantly advancing polar science research.
The students explored the bridge, engine room and laboratories – marveling at the advanced navigation equipment and intricate mechanical systems. The visit is said to have really boosted their ambitions in the maritime field.
Icebreaker orientation
Elsewhere, NYU Shanghai recently welcomed its largest freshman class ever, with 520 new students.
The dynamic orientation week featured educational seminars and icebreaker games – fostering new international friendships – as well as involving campus familiarization tours and wider explorations of Shanghai itself.
The City Walk event introduced freshmen to iconic landmarks like the Bund and the Oriental Pearl Tower, igniting their curiosity about Shanghai.
Orientation week also included food stalls offering pizza, kebabs and desserts, traditional Chinese crafts like sugar painting and paper cutting, alongside a lawn music show.
