SHU students explore poetic landscapes of Suzhou's ancient town
Twenty-nine students from 20 countries at Shanghai University visited the ancient town of Lili in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, on Oct 17.
Adorned in traditional Chinese hanfu and carrying oil-paper umbrellas, they wandered through the town's winding alleys. A small river, like a green ribbon, meandered through the area, where locals were seen washing clothes and chatting by the riverside.
By a stone arch bridge, the students experienced the allure of classical Chinese poetry, encountering a scene evocative of the line "Where's she I need? Beyond the stream" from The Book of Songs (Chinese:《诗经》).
During a poetry exchange, the students recited renowned works in both Chinese and English.
The event concluded with a visit to the Six Arts Museum, where they admired a rich collection curated by Mr Du Weiming. Thousands of artifacts, including ancient architectural components, antique furniture, and intricately carved wood and stone pieces, showcased the ingenuity and craftsmanship of ancient artisans, leaving the students in awe and bringing their cultural exploration to a fulfilling close.
