SISU students captivated by historical stage play
A group of students from Shanghai International Studies University recently attended the large-scale historical stage play — Jingchu Impression.
Directed by renowned Chinese dance artist Yang Liping, the play is based on ancient poet Qu Yuan's four classic works. "Jingchu" referred to a region that included what is now the Hubei province and its surrounding areas. The play portrays the rich history and culture of the Jingchu region during the Warring States period (475-221 BC).
The production blends traditional art forms such as opera, shadow puppetry, puppetry, and martial arts with modern technology, bringing ancient texts to life through dynamic artistic expression.
After the performance, excitement could still be felt as the students engaged in lively discussions about their impressions.
A student from Egypt said that the performance evoked strong memories of her homeland, through themes such as deities of death and sacrificial rituals, and appreciated these common cultural parallels with China.
A student from Vietnamese described the stage scenes as particularly iconic, commenting that witnessing textbook knowledge animated through vivid stage performances was not only astonishing but also enlightening.
