Shanghai Theatre Academy students explore Wukang Road
Some 20 international students from the Shanghai Theatre Academy recently explored the famous Wukang Road in Shanghai.
Established in 1907, Wukang Road – boasting a mix of architectural styles including British country villas, Spanish residences, Baroque gardens, and Neoclassical buildings – stands out as one of the most European-inspired neighborhoods in Shanghai.
During his 1933 visit to Shanghai, playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) lauded the road. He said that it inspired creativity in all who walked its paths, prompting them to write, draw, or sing, regardless of their usual pursuits.
The students visited various sites including Dingxiang Garden, the former residence of the silk industry tycoon Mo Shangqing (1871-1932), the former residence of the famous writer Ba Jin (1904-2005), and the iconic Wukang Building.
One student from India even donned traditional Chinese attire for the event. He said his lifelong fascination with China – particularly traditional aspects like opera, Chinese dance, and tea culture – has fueled his ambition as a classical Indian dancer to foster cultural exchanges between India and China.
A theater directing student from New Zealand found fresh inspiration for her creative endeavors during the walk. Eager to craft more cross-cultural works that resonate with a wider audience, she said she looks forward to expanding her artistic horizons in Shanghai.
Echoing a sentiment of belonging, a Malaysian student described Shanghai as his home away from home, where he relishes the harmonious blend of diverse global cultures. He expressed his intention to stay in the city for his future development.
