Return to Shanghai: Bulgarian scholar's academic odyssey
Antoaneta Velikova
From Bulgaria
PhD student at Shanghai Academy of Global Governance & Area Studies
Velikova's academic and professional journey as an international student spans over a decade. After completing her undergraduate studies, she pursued a master's degree in international relations at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
After graduating, Velikova returned to Bulgaria, where she taught at The Confucius Institute in Sofia, worked for a Chinese agricultural firm, and participated in several Belt and Road Initiative seminars.
She humorously notes that her path seems intrinsically linked to China, a connection that has profoundly shaped her career.
A significant milestone in Velikova's career was her selection to represent Bulgaria at the Global Peace Summit in Istanbul.
At the summit, young leaders from around the world deliberated on "Reshaping Youth Response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals", with Velikova sharing her perspectives.
The experience fueled her passion for the intersection of international relations, cultural studies, and global cognitive dynamics.
After evaluating various Chinese universities offering international relations programs, Velikova chose to pursue her PhD at Shanghai International Studies University. The Shanghai Academy of Global Governance & Area Studies — a think tank and talent cultivation center — became her academic home.
Returning to China for her doctoral studies, Velikova was struck by the country's rapid development.
She observed that a single smartphone now facilitates all aspects of daily life, a stark contrast to her experiences as a student over a decade ago. Moreover, she says the city resonates with her life journey, reflecting a narrative of continuous growth and exploration.
