Melodies of service: Eileen McGhee's journey of volunteerism and music in Shanghai
Eileen McGhee, a student from the United States, began her musical journey at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2017, pursuing a bachelor's degree in flute performance. By 2022, she had advanced her studies with a Chinese Government Scholarship, working towards a master's degree under the guidance of Associate Professor He Shengqi.

Over the years in China, McGhee has not only showcased her musical talent but also made a profound local impact through her commitment to social service. In 2017, she volunteered at the university's 90th anniversary celebration, where she demonstrated dedication and teamwork as a freshman.
In 2020, amid the global pandemic, McGhee volunteered for an online tutoring project. She offered three months of free music lessons to the children of healthcare workers in Shanghai and Hubei province. Her volunteer work extended to special needs education as well. In February 2025, she participated in a winter care program for children with special needs in Shanghai. Through music and companionship, she helped the children build confidence, which earned her the title of outstanding volunteer.

McGhee's musical performances are equally remarkable. She has repeatedly served as the principal flutist for the university's symphony orchestra (Group A) and held a solo concert in 2021. Her active participation in major school performances, including operas, flute concerts, and piano recitals, further underscores her talent.

During her studies, McGhee learned from numerous world-renowned flutists. She attended masterclasses with experts like Henrik Wiese, Joohee Lee, Sarah Louvion, and Carol Wincenc, receiving high praise. In 2018, she was invited to the University of Music and Theatre Munich for an academic exchange, showcasing her talent internationally.
Her dedication and excellence have been recognized with numerous accolades. In 2018, she won first prize at the "Doppler Super Cup" Flute Competition, followed by a special award at the same event in 2023. Additionally, she earned second prize in the wind instrument category of the Yamaha Music Scholarship in 2021. These achievements highlight her musical talent and relentless pursuit of excellence.
