Students from the intensive Chinese language program 2-3B class at East China Normal University recently visited Panlong Tiandi, one of Shanghai's popular tourist and leisure destinations, for an immersive "Ancient Town Cultural Experience Journey".

Blending the architectural styles from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) with a modern lifestyle aesthetic, Panlong Tiandi has been revitalized into a picturesque waterside retreat. Its iconic canals and stone bridges are now complemented by stylish cafes and designer boutiques, making it a favorite weekend escape — particularly among young people.

During their visit, the students explored a range of shops showcasing traditional Chinese culture, such as teahouses, folk art galleries, and handicraft stores. They practiced their Chinese by engaging with shop staff, inquiring about the cultural significance and stories behind the items on display.

At a steelyard-themed folk art gallery, students admired intricate decorative pieces and asked about their meanings. A staff member explained, for example, that pumpkins symbolize lasting blessings and a bountiful harvest in Chinese culture.

In a nearby teahouse, the students sampled different varieties of tea and learned about their distinct flavors and health benefits. They discovered that white tea, in particular, contains anti-aging properties, making it a top choice for promoting healthy skin and boosting metabolism.

To gain more insight into the area, the students conducted casual street interviews with tourists. Some visitors praised Panlong Tiandi for its pet-friendly, relaxing environment, while others appreciated its clean, cozy atmosphere and abundance of charming cafes and teahouses. Many noted that, unlike other ancient towns in Shanghai, Panlong Tiandi stands out for its refined, culturally themed shops — offering a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary styles that resonate with younger generations.

The students also recorded short vlogs to share their cultural adventure. Through this hands-on experience, they not only enhanced their spoken Chinese skills but also gained a fresh perspective on Shanghai.
