International students from Shanghai discover Zhejiang's ancient charm
More than 70 international students from Shanghai International Studies University explored the charm of traditional Chinese waterside towns during a spring field trip to Xitang Ancient Town in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, on May 17. Participants came from countries including Russia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, France, and Egypt.
Xitang Ancient Town is known for its centuries-old architecture, winding waterways, and covered corridors. Its well-preserved layout offers a vivid glimpse into life in ancient China.
Students wandered through the ancient town's stone-paved alleys, drawn to its white walls, black-tiled roofs, and tranquil canals.
Nicolas Plante from Canada said the lively atmosphere and local life made Xitang unique. "Getting a traditional Chinese massage with friends was relaxing and exciting," he added.
Nozomi Ota from Japan said the visit brought to life what she had only read about in textbooks. "This is my first time seeing the architecture in person. It's even more enchanting in real life," she said while standing on a stone bridge.
Yeldana Shardarbek from Kazakhstan was thrilled to learn that Mission: Impossible III was filmed in Xitang. "I didn't expect an international blockbuster to feature such a beautiful town — it shows the global appeal of Chinese culture," she said.
The visit was part of the university's "second classroom" program, designed to deepen students' cultural understanding and improve language skills through immersive, real-world experiences.
