Tiago Nogara, a Brazilian doctoral student in the 2022 cohort of Global Studies at the College of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University, has spent three years immersed in academic research while promoting cultural and scholarly exchange between China and Latin America.

His work focuses on China–Latin America relations, pursued with both academic rigor and a clear sense of purpose.

Guided by Professor Jiang Shixue, a leading scholar in Latin American studies in China, Tiago has already established a strong academic presence. He is the first author of several papers published in internationally recognized journals indexed by SSCI and ESSCI, including Third World Quarterly and Latin American Policy.

Doctoral programs at Shanghai University are no walk in the park. They typically take four years to complete, with demanding coursework and high expectations. Tiago managed to complete the program in three years, demonstrating discipline, foresight, and perseverance.

He wrapped up all coursework and credits in his first year, mapped out a clear research path, and got a head start on publishing papers. This foundation allowed him to focus on his dissertation for the remaining two years.

However, he did not stop there. Tiago also passed the HSK Level 5 Chinese proficiency test, steadily sharpening his language skills and strengthening his ability to engage in intercultural dialogue.

To stay on top of everything, Tiago structured his days with clockwork precision — carving out time for writing, reading, language learning, and academic events. He maximized the university’s resources and threw himself wholeheartedly into his research.

Reflecting on his experience, Tiago often speaks with appreciation for the warmth and openness of the Chinese people. He is especially thankful for the opportunity to study at a top Chinese university and take part in a vibrant academic community.

His advisor, Professor Jiang, praised him:

"I often tell my Chinese students that a great dissertation requires four things: solid Chinese skills, the ability to read in foreign languages, strong subject knowledge, and diligence. International students write in English, so they should have three: excellent writing, strong expertise, and hard work. Tiago has all three, which is why his dissertation is outstanding."

Tiago, in turn, credits much of his progress to Professor Jiang:

"Professor Jiang has been a guiding light throughout my studies. His depth of knowledge, work ethic, and personal integrity have inspired me deeply. I'm sincerely grateful for his support and mentorship."

Now, Tiago is taking his next big step. He has been appointed lecturer at Nankai University, one of China's top universities known for hiring only the best. It is uncommon for recent PhD graduates to secure such a position immediately, and his appointment reflects his achievements and potential.

Looking ahead, Tiago is preparing course materials, refining teaching methods, and planning to maintain a strong research agenda. His academic interests remain focused on Latin American studies, international relations, and world history.

"I'll do my best to honor this opportunity," he said. "I want to keep exploring China–Latin America relations and South–South cooperation, and give back through steady, meaningful contributions."
