Choo Yi Lin: Resilience, courage, and growth in Shanghai
Choo Yi Lin, a Malaysian undergraduate majoring in finance, graduated this summer from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Her story reflects grace, resilience, grit, and confidence.
Her connection with Shanghai began early. At the age of 15, she developed a fascination with Chinese culture and dreamed of studying in China. Over the years, that dream solidified into determination. Eventually, she left her homeland to explore China's most vibrant and dynamic city — Shanghai.
Her decision to attend SUFE was not an impulse but rather the culmination of a long-held aspiration. Drawn initially by the university's promotional video, she was further convinced by SUFE's reputation as a leading institution in finance and economics. Despite having the academic credentials to attend top universities worldwide, she remained committed to SUFE. "Here, I found the challenges and treasures I was chasing after," she said.
Looking back on her four years at SUFE, Choo describes a transformative journey. In her first year, she focused heavily on academics, striving to excel in every exam. By senior year, her perspective had broadened. She realized that beyond grades, real-world experience and soft skills mattered just as much. Internships, business competitions, and social activities also helped her grow. "They broadened my horizons and brought me to a bigger world," she said.
Eager to make friends and embrace campus life, Choo joined the student union. That decision marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in her university journey. Within two years, she became the head of the public relations department, building deep friendships with dedicated mentors and supportive peers. These relationships brought warmth and joy, while also teaching her the value of responsibility, collaboration, and solidarity.
Her time in the union shaped her character and left a meaningful impact on the team. Among the many memories, two stood out. One was the successful organization of a finance-themed activity at a local primary school. The other was the day she completed her three-year tenure with honor, stepping down with quiet pride and a sense of fulfillment.
As graduation approached, Choo expressed heartfelt gratitude to SUFE for the knowledge and friendships she gained. She also thanked her family for their support and her friends for their companionship and encouragement.
Quoting lyrics from her favorite song, Choo also paid tribute to her past self: "I'm brave, I'm bruised, I'm who I'm meant to be, this is me." With resilience shaped by challenge and growth, Choo now looks to the future with confidence, ready to carry forward the same courage and determination that guided her through university.
