International students reflect on SCO Summer Program
East China Normal University hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summer Program this summer, offering international students immersive opportunities to explore Chinese culture. Three participants share their reflections on the program.
Palina Marozava, Belarus, Minsk State Linguistic University
Palina Marozava, a Chinese translation major from Belarus, said that although she had studied Chinese for three years, she had few chances to communicate with native speakers.
The summer program changed that. It allowed her to improve Chinese proficiency while enjoying the playful learning and cultural activities. She participated in class discussions, Chinese conversations, and diverse cultural experiences, which helped her overcome the fear of speaking out. Teachers were patient and encouraged students to express their ideas despite minor mistakes. In this supportive environment, she felt closer to Chinese culture and the local lifestyle.
She reflected on various on-and off-campus activities such as city tours, cultural workshops, and group tasks, all showcasing Shanghai's distinctive charm. She was also impressed by the campus, with its lush trees and architecture that blends tradition and modernity, making every walk refreshing.
More importantly, she gained valuable friendships. Although from different cultural backgrounds, students shared their traditions, cuisines, and stories, broadening horizons via cross-cultural exchanges.
Karina Kiriiazi, Russia, Far Eastern Federal University
Karina Kiriiazi initially worried about challenges from different dialects, food, and climate between South China and her hometown. She adapted quickly, thanks to the university's support and the relaxed atmosphere that encouraged students from around the world to exchange ideas and share their cultures.
She enjoyed the culinary culture and tasted a wide variety of Chinese dishes. School canteens offered diverse options, including halal food.
Karina was impressed by her Chinese language teacher, who showed a systematic teaching style. Students practiced speaking, learned new vocabulary and grammar, and discussed various topics. The pleasant learning environment inspired a deeper interest in Chinese culture and history.
She also appreciated the campus environment, noting its abundant greenery and cozy learning spaces. Here, she not only received a quality education but also gained valuable friendships and opportunities to explore Chinese cultural diversity.
Daria Gurova, Russia, Pacific National University
Daria Gurova, from Khabarovsk, said the SCO Summer Program gave her valuable insights into Shanghai, a vibrant and colorful metropolis blending traditional heritage and modern urban charm.
She enjoyed wandering the city and observing daily life. Taking the Shanghai Metro was also her first time riding a subway.
She also expressed her appreciation for the campus's natural environment, spotting birds she had never seen in Russia. Adapting to Shanghai was easy, as the weather was similar to Khabarovsk.
A highlight for her was the cultural exchanges with students from other countries, which helped break down stereotypes and form lasting friendships.
Regarding her Chinese classes, Daria said she felt fortunate to have excellent teachers. Eager to explore the city beyond campus, she often found her time and energy in high demand.
