French TCM practitioners gain hands-on experience in Putuo
A group of French trainees from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s international program recently visited the Putuo District Central Hospital for immersive clinical training in TCM.
Huang Yong, deputy director of the hospital’s TCM department, demonstrated techniques and explained theories in simple terms to the trainees — all practicing TCM therapists in France — who took notes and raised questions.
In the rehabilitation area, they observed acupuncture for neck and shoulder conditions. During a cupping session, many tried the technique themselves. One exclaimed upon seeing purplish marks on the skin: “Look! The color speaks — this indicates cold stagnation, just like the textbooks say!”
Nathalie Pineda, who had received cupping treatment earlier, shared: "The effect was amazing! My sinusitis symptoms disappeared within 24 hours." As a TCM learner with four-to-five years of training in France, she valued the opportunity to experience authentic practices in China.
The group also attended a class on acupuncture for facial paralysis and practiced the acupuncture techniques under guidance.
Professor Thierry Vinai from the French Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Institut de Medecine Traditionnelle Chinoise de France) noted that such experiences help students gain deeper clinical insights and improve their skills. With over 40 years in TCM, he hopes the program will cultivate more young foreign practitioners.
The program, dedicated to globalizing TCM education, combines theoretical and clinical training while promoting cross-cultural exchange. Putuo District Central Hospital, as a designated base, continues to innovate teaching methods for international trainees.
