Sam's Club to open 7th Shanghai store
US membership retailer Sam's Club will open its seventh Shanghai store on Dec 16. The new location, in the Tangzhen area of Pudong New Area, marks another step in the brand's continued expansion in China.
Sam's Club entered the Shanghai market in 2010 with its first store on West Gaoke Road in Pudong. Its expansion accelerated after 2019. By 2023, new stores in the Zhenru area and Jiading district lifted the citywide total to six, the most of any city in China.
The new East Pudong store highlights the company's continued focus on China and its members. Shanghai is not only the city with the most Sam's Club locations, but also the area with the widest coverage of the company's Fast Delivery service, reaching nearly every district except Chongming.
In the 2025 fiscal year, from Feb 1, 2024, to Jan 31, 2025, Walmart China reported net sales of approximately $20.3 billion. Sam's Club generated more than 100 billion yuan (about $14.16 billion), which was over two-thirds of the total and remained the company's main source of growth. Based on these figures, annual sales at an average Sam's Club store in China are estimated at close to 2 billion yuan.
Sam's Club expects to open 10 new stores across China this year. This will be the largest number of openings in a single year since the brand entered the country.
