Early bird tickets now available for Wallace Chan's jewelry art exhibition
Renowned contemporary jewelry artist Wallace Chan's solo exhibition Wallace Chan: Half a Century will debut on July 3 at the Shanghai Museum East.
The exhibit also marks the inaugural showcase of the Shanghai Museum's Drawing Inspiration from the Past: Masters of Modern and Contemporary Art series, which celebrates renowned modern and contemporary artists worldwide with innovative displays.
A collaborative effort between the Shanghai Museum and Nina Hald, the esteemed curator of Danish royal jewelry, the exhibition is thoughtfully divided into three distinct sections — "Sculpture and Carrier", "Chaos and Magic", and "Wisdom and Power", providing a comprehensive exploration of Wallace Chan's illustrious career spanning over half a century.
Over 190 of the artist's masterpieces will be showcased alongside selected treasures from renowned institutions such as the Shanghai Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
One of the captivating highlights includes Wallace Chan's masterpiece Stilled Life, where a delicate cicada cradles an imperial emerald jadeite, showcasing his innovative, patented technique the "Wallace Cut", which combines precise calculation, gem faceting, and 360-degree intaglio, to create multiple reflections.
Another standout piece, Return of the King, crafted from white jade, diamonds, and titanium, is a fusion of Western modern artistry with the ancient jade carving traditions of China's Warring States Period (475-221 BC).
Wallace Chan began as a gemstone carver in 1973 at the age of 16. To date, Chan is one of the only artists to use titanium in artworks of such color, scale, and complexity. Learn more about the artist at wallace-chan.com
