The UN-backed Global Alliance on AI for Industry and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence has opened at Shanghai's Grand NeoBay, a sci-tech innovation hub in the city's Minhang district.

As the first international institution under the UN framework dedicated to AI cooperation, the AIM Global CoE was jointly established by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Research Institute during the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference.

The first group of institutions establishing a presence at the site includes the Chinese Secretariat of the AI Alliance Network, the Global Center for Sensing Enhanced AI, the Technical University of Madrid and the Singapore-based Artificial Intelligence International Institute.

The site is housed in the Grand NeoBay Sci-Tech Innovation Achievement Transformation Center, a newly completed twin-tower office complex with 12 above-ground floors and two underground levels, reaching 60 meters in height. Covering a total construction area of about 52,300 square meters, the facility offers office spaces, shared conference rooms, and 305 parking spaces.

Designed to support digital and intelligent equipment, aerospace technology, life sciences, and advanced energy, the facility is dedicated to technology development and achievement transformation in strategic emerging industries. It aims to offer high-quality spaces and professional services for universities, research institutes and industry leaders.

The building is located within the Grand Neobay, which hosts over 13,000 enterprises, including 706 high-tech companies and 263 specialized, high-end, innovation-driven small and medium-sized enterprises that provide distinctive products or services. Among them, 181 companies have valuations exceeding 100 million yuan ($13.92 million), 47 surpass 1 billion yuan, and 10 are listed company headquarters.
