Founded in 1954, Shanghai Institute of Technology (SIT) is a full-time public university specializing in applied technology.

The university has been ranked first for five consecutive years among universities of applied technology in Shanghai since 2018, and is currently striving to become a high-level innovative university with international influence.

The university has two campuses in Fengxian district and Xuhui district in Shanghai.

SIT is renowned for its perfume and aroma technology program as well as its chemistry program. It has 19 faculties offering 56 undergraduate programs. It also has a doctoral program, 8 academic master's programs and 11 professional master's programs.

There are more than 1,700 faculty members, including more than 1,300 full-time teachers, over 600 of whom have senior professional and technical positions.

Among similar institutions in Shanghai, SIT has one of the most patent applications and granted invention patents.

The university has established cooperation relationships with more than 150 universities and research institutions from over 20 countries and regions. It recognizes credits from more than 50 partner universities.

SIT has leveraged its disciplinary advantages and collaborated with industry-leading companies to establish the first international cosmetic college in China. It has also created the Sino-European Intellectual Property Institute in partnership with internationally renowned universities.

The university actively contributes to the Belt and Road Initiative. For example, it has launched the China-Laos Railway Engineering Talent Class to cultivate outstanding railway engineering professionals for countries involved in the BRI. The university has received funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Asian Cooperation Projects and received approved for the establishment of the Shanghai Belt and Road China-Laos Railway Engineering International Joint Laboratory. It has also established the Belt and Road Lancang-Mekong Railway Interconnection Center.
