Fudan launches global student case analysis competition
Fudan University is hosting the "Understanding Chinese Modernization" Case Analysis Competition.
This event will explore governance-related cases and experiences from China's modernization journey, fostering research skills, and encouraging insightful analysis among young scholars from China and abroad.
01 Participants
The competition welcomes individuals or teams, each consisting of up to five members, with the stipulation that participants can lead only one project. Eligibility is limited to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in accredited higher education institutions in China.
The competition features two tracks: one for Chinese students and another for international students studying in China, each with distinct evaluation criteria. Teams competing in the international student track must adhere to the following guidelines:
> The team leader must be an international student in China.
> Over 50 percent of the team members must be international students in China.
Each team may include two to three mentors: an academic advisor from the university faculty, an industry expert from relevant sectors (government, business, community, etc.), and, if necessary, an additional faculty mentor from the team leader's institution.
02 Topics
The competition centers on the theme of "China's Governance." Any case with research and practical significance related to governance in China's modernization process is eligible. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.
Suggested topics include:
(1) Governance of foreign affairs
Management mechanisms for multinational enterprises and international organizations in China; protection of overseas interests, foreign legal frameworks, management of foreign nationals, local foreign affairs, border governance; international discourse systems, cultural exchange, foreign talent training, and promoting Chinese cultural narratives.
(2) Governance of technological innovation
National innovation systems, technology policies, intellectual property protection; legislation and policies on AI development and regulation; policies on basic and applied research, and the transformation of research outcomes.
(3) Urban and rural development governance
Digital/smart city development, resilient city construction, urban planning, urban agglomeration and economic belt development, public space construction, urban renewal; rural vitalization and environment improvement; community services, community building, and conflict resolution.
(4) Ecological and environmental governance
Pollution prevention, ecological protection, biodiversity, waste management; carbon goals, carbon trading markets, environmental technology, clean production, circular economy, new energy, and materials; national park systems.
(5) Public safety governance
Emergency management systems, policies, team building, education, smart and social emergency management, disaster prevention and mitigation; safety in production, food and drug safety, biosecurity, cybersecurity, financial security, risk prevention, international safety.
(6) Modern government governance
Digital/smart government construction, institutional reform, operational assurance, fiscal policies (taxation, budget management).
(7) Others
Cultural industry governance related to heritage protection, tourism, and cultural innovation; modern enterprise governance related to State-owned enterprise reform, private economy development, risk management, and compliance; public health governance related to medical policy, reform, and elderly care systems.
03 Schedule
The preliminary phase runs from the announcement until Feb 21, 2025. Entries must be submitted by this deadline, with the final scheduled for mid-April 2025 at Fudan University.
(1) Registration
Scan the QR code to complete the registration questionnaire by Dec 31, 2024.
(2) Proposal submission
Submit the registration form (Attachment 1), competition commitment letter (Attachment 3), proof of enrollment, and the case analysis report (in Word and PDF formats) by 5 pm on Feb 21, 2025, to sirpa_tw@fudan.edu.cn. Files should be named "Track+School+Team Name+Topic".

(3) Preliminary evaluation: Experts will conduct a remote review of submissions, which will determine which teams advance to the finals.
(4) Final presentation
Finalists will send one to two representatives for an in-person presentation and Q&A session.
(5) Awards
Teams will be evaluated and awarded Grand, First, Second, and Third prizes.
04 Requirements for entries
> Entries must contain practical case analysis, or governance proposals, based on real-world practice that is independently researched by the team. They should identify and analyze real issues, propose solutions, and offer insights with applicability and replicability.
> All team members must provide proof of enrollment, complete the registration form, and have mentors provide feedback, and sign off on project funding. Funded projects are encouraged to participate.
> Teams must own the intellectual property of their submissions. Plagiarism will result in disqualification and potential legal action. If the entry is based on a faculty project, consent from the faculty is required.
> Submissions must adhere to topic, content, and format requirements (Attachment 2), and cannot be submitted simultaneously in multiple competitions. Entries that have won provincial or higher-level awards are ineligible.
> Teams must ensure submitted projects have been completed within the past three years and have a plagiarism rate below 15 percent.
> Submissions for both tracks must meet these requirements, with all phases conducted in Chinese.
05 Awards and benefits
(1) Awards
- Chinese student track: One Grand Prize, three First Prizes, five Second Prizes, seven Third Prizes, and Merit Awards for other finalists.
- International student track: One Grand Prize, one First Prize, two Second Prizes, three Third Prizes, and Merit Awards for other finalists.
(2) Benefits
- All participants receive certificates.
- Support for turning winning entries into academic papers or policy reports.
- Winning entries included in the competition compilation, with potential for public reporting and publication.
- Exceptional Grand and First Prize winners may receive recommendation letters for Fudan University's graduate programs.
- Grand and First Prize winners may join Fudan's "China's Governance" project with professional guidance.
- Outstanding mentors may be appointed as educational advisors at Fudan University.
06 Support
1. No entry, accommodation, or meal fees will be charged to participants.
2. Finalists will receive accommodation and meals during the final.
3. Travel and other non-competition expenses are the participants' responsibility.
