A new semester has begun. Perhaps you've just returned from a memorable trip, or still be savoring the taste of home-cooked meals, or simply haven't fully woken up from holiday mode and are not ready to get back to the rhythm of student life yet.

Here's a practical guide to help you ease back in, stay organized, and start the semester on the right foot.

1. Rebuild your daily routine

  • Tidy your living space

You may start with small tasks such as changing your bed sheets, wiping dust from the corners of your desk, and organizing the items on your desk. This isn't just about welcoming a more diligent and better self in the new semester. It's also about making sure that when you wake up tomorrow, you'll love your desk.

  • Update your emergency contacts

Save the phone numbers of your university's security department, international student office, counselor, and landlord or dorm manager in your phone. Knowing exactly whom to turn to in an unforeseen situation will help you stay composed and give you peace of mind.

  • Restock daily essentials

Head to the supermarket for supplies such as shampoo, toothpaste, and tissues. On the way, you might also pick up a bunch of flowers or a box of spices from your home country. The richness of life often lies in these "non-essential" things.

  • Reset your body clock

If you're still struggling with jet lag, start going to bed and waking up 15 minutes earlier each day, and you'll feel more at ease when you need to wake up at 8 am on Monday. Also, think about what you'd like to do with that extra half hour you gain by waking up early.

2. Reset your academic rhythm

  • Download and read course syllabi

Record all key information, including assignment deadlines and exam dates for each course, in your calendar, whether on your phone, computer, or planner. This simple habit helps prevent unnecessary confusion later in the semester.

  • Note your professors' office hours and locations

Familiarize yourself with their offices in advance in case you need support one day.

  • Double-check your schedule and classroom locations

Check whether any classes have been rescheduled for the new term and ensure that your elective courses do not overlap. Walking the route in advance can help you avoid rushing across campus in the first week. Also, identify your free time slots each week and make purposeful use of them beyond the classroom, allowing you to integrate more fully into campus life.

  • Activate all academic accounts

Activate your university email, course management system, and library account. Check if you can log in normally. If there are any issues, contact your university's IT department promptly. While you're online, take a moment to browse the university's notice board for any activities or research projects that interest you, so that you can have a more fulfilling life outside the classroom.

  • Preview reading materials

Even reading the titles can help you avoid feeling lost in class. More importantly, it sends you a signal: you are ready for the new semester.

3. Reconfirm your student status

  • Check your visa and passport validity.

Check your passport and visa or residence permit to make sure they are valid for the required period. If needed, make an appointment with the international student office immediately.

  • Update your address and contact information.

If you have changed your address or other details for the new semester, you must report the change to the local police station within 24 hours. Also, ensure your latest mobile number is saved in the university system to avoid missing important information.

  • Check your registration status.

Log in to the university system and confirm that your registration and course selection for the new semester are all completed, with no red "incomplete" warnings.

4. Rebuild your social circle

  • Send a message to family or friends

Let them know you are settled. The message doesn't need to be long; just letting them know you're thinking of them is enough. This also reminds you that you are supported from afar.

  • Create a wish list

Set a few goals for the new semester, whether it's learning to make a latte, visiting museums around the city, or sending your family a photo of the sky every week. Give yourself something to look forward to, as these small goals can bring motivation and joy to your routine.

  • Attend at least one back-to-school activity

Whether it's orientation or a club recruitment fair, joining in isn't just about networking. It's about the chance to build meaningful relationships and encounter things that make you think, "This semester will be worth it."

Dear students, may this semester bring you both the motivation to move forward and the calm to appreciate the journey. May you continue to grow and excel during your time studying in China.
