Wimbledon in town: Grass tennis courts open in city center
Five newly laid grass tennis courts at Shanghai's historic Jiangwan Stadium are bringing a touch of Wimbledon to the city. Against a backdrop of 1930s architecture, players dressed in traditional whites rally across the turf, channeling the elegance and spirit of Britain's most iconic tournament.
On July 5, the stadium hosted the Yeahh Park tennis tournament, drawing both amateurs and professional players from across the city. Dressed head to toe in white — a nod to Wimbledon tradition — players took to the professional-grade courts, experiencing the thrill of grass-court tennis without leaving town.
The new courts are part of a larger effort to revitalize Jiangwan Stadium, now operated under the urban sports brand Yeahh Park. Built to international standards, the venue offers a premium playing experience that caters to the growing appetite for diverse and high-quality sports infrastructure in the city.
Organizers aim to make the tournament an annual fixture, positioning Jiangwan as a new landmark for grass-court tennis.
