How to obtain home Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is available at most public places in Shanghai such as train stations, coffee shops, and convenience stores.
Getting internet for your home is easy as well. You first need to know what speeds you need (both download and upload), how much you will actually pay each month, and what type of equipment you need to rent or buy.
Then you will need to choose from one of the three major broadband providers: China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile. All you need to do is explore their available packages online or visit their service counters. When signing up for the service, make sure to bring your passport for identification purposes.
Foreign residents can also access English-language online service zones and offline bilingual service counters provided by local broadband operators to make applications and consultations easier.
You can also request a Chinese-speaking friend to call the provider's office and schedule a visit to your home. Broadband internet prices depend on speed, contract duration, and other factors.
If you move within Shanghai, you can apply for a home Wi-Fi relocation service through official online platforms, service hotlines, or your broadband provider's physical outlets. Standard relocation services are typically free for household users within urban network coverage areas. Any network equipment rented from operators should be properly maintained and returned when service ends.
