As the highest honor bestowed by the Chinese government upon foreign experts, this accolade acknowledges individuals who have made outstanding contributions to China's economic and social advancement.
Waley-Cohen becomes the second recipient of this award affiliated with NYU Shanghai after Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman.
"I feel deeply honored to receive this recognition," said Waley-Cohen, "but more than a personal honor, it is a valuable acknowledgment of the ever-growing significance of our school in the Chinese educational world and people-to-people exchange between China and the world."
As the Julius Silver Professor of History at New York University who joined the university in 1992, Waley-Cohen has considerable expertise in early modern Chinese history, China and the West, and Chinese imperial culture, especially in the Qianlong era.
Furthermore, Waley-Cohen has spearheaded NYU Shanghai's achievements in talent cultivation, research innovation, and faculty development over the past decade, establishing the university as a well-regarded research institution globally.
Her remarkable contributions to education in Shanghai also won her the Magnolia Silver Award in 2015 and the Magnolia Gold Award in 2019, conferred by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government.
