Shanghai airports to double overseas flights
Since March 31, Shanghai airports have entered the 2024 summer and autumn aviation season, marking a near doubling of overseas flights.
During the new seasons, the two major airports in Shanghai are anticipated to handle an average of 2,481 flights per day, including 1,686 domestic flights, signifying a 0.4 percent year-on-year increase, and 566 overseas flights, representing a 91.2 percent year-on-year growth. The number of overseas destinations at these airports increased by three compared to the previous season, totaling 91 destinations.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport aims to serve 154 domestic destinations, with 19 domestic passenger routes operating with more than eight departures per day. Additionally, it plans to facilitate 90 overseas destinations, including the reinstatement of routes to St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk in Russia as well as new routes to Athens in Greece, and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. There will be 26 intercontinental passenger routes with at least one flight per day, covering destinations such as Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco in the United States, Frankfurt in Germany, Paris in France, London in England, Rome and Milan in Italy, Moscow in Russia, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
At Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, there will be 75 domestic destinations with 15 domestic passenger routes with more than eight departures per day. Additionally, there will be five overseas destinations, including Tokyo (Haneda International Airport) in Japan, Seoul (Gimpo International Airport) in South Korea, and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taipei (Taipei Songshan Airport) in China.
It is noteworthy that on Feb 29, the Civil Aviation Administration of China announced during its routine press conference that as of March 31, both Chinese and US airlines will have the capacity to operate up to 100 scheduled passenger flights per week. Under this new policy, it is anticipated that routes from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to destinations like Los Angeles and San Francisco, which currently have at least one flight per day, will witness further expansion.
